All lawns, regardless of their condition, can benefit from some level of renovation every year or so. Summer heat, disease and insects take their toll, and over time, most soil becomes compacted or hard. Your turf has trouble filling in those thin and browning spots, and without intervention, the cycle of thin turf and soil compaction will repeat itself. If any of this sounds familiar, aeration and overseeding might be just what you need.

Aeration is one of the best things you can do for your lawn. It is the process of making thousands of holes in the turf to open the soil and break up thatch. The cores removed by aeration “melt” into the lawn and improve thatch breakdown. Core aeration makes physical space in the soil structure to relieve compaction and allows for water, air and nutrients to more easily reach your turf roots.

During aeration, a machine known as a core aerator pulls plugs of soil and thatch up from the lawn to break up compacted soil and create more room for air, water and fertilizer to reach the roots.

Most lawns can benefit from overseeding, and seeding in conjunction with aeration is a convenient way to introduce new, improved turf varieties to your lawn. Seed science is always improving, and overseeding can introduce turfgrass varieties that are better suited for your specific property. With reseeding and core aeration, your lawn can be looking great again by the time spring arrives.
