You’ve most likely heard about “annual” plants and “perennial” plants in the landscape. What makes annual plants “annual” and perennial plants “perennial”? It’s all in the life cycle.

Annual Flowers – Season-Long Color

As the name implies, an annual is a plant that lives for just one season. With annuals, you can enjoy beautiful color throughout the summer season. These dependable single-season flowers hit the ground running and provide a spectacular show all season long. Annuals provide an entire spectrum of options in terms of size, color and growth patterns. Some flowers work well as edging plants. Others can be planted in masses and work well in large planting beds or around entry signage.

Perennials – Recurring Plants That Anchor Your Landscape

The greatest reward for the least amount of maintenance—that’s what you get with perennials. A perennial is a plant that will survive in the landscape, typically for three or more years. Unlike annuals, perennials will sometimes have a shorter flowering cycle, but even after their flowers are spent, they provide a lush greenery to the landscape. Perennials are often typically a bit larger than most annuals, and while annuals give some flashy color, perennials are ideal for providing consistent greenery and texture.
